Like shoes or a tie, a watch is a good indicator of style and is an essential for any well-dressed man. There are so many different styles of watches; dress, casual, sport, classic, modern. Those with wide faces, large numbers, and no numbers, jeweled, and colorful, the variety are seemingly endless. A watch provides an excellent opportunity, as an accessory, to accentuate the personality of its wearer.

Watches are made to serve different purposes and fit the needs of different types of people. Some watches are created for scuba divers, others are created for athletes, and some are created to help the blind. The pocket watch, first created during the 1920s, was used before the wristwatch. Usually a watch is worn on the non-dominate hand and should fit snugly, but comfortably around the wrist. As a casual accessory, it’s not necessary for a watch to match your belt, but in a more formal dress, the watch should match the belt and/or coordinate with tie bar and cufflinks.

Recently, I’ve been wearing the classic Bristol by the Swiss watch company Daniel Wellington as my everyday watch. This watch compliments my classic aesthetic, is extremely lightweight and has a silent tick, all of which I appreciate. The simple leather strap and the clean white face make it a versatile accessory to dress up or down and I feel comfortable wearing it for most occasions, other than my workout.

Another favored timepiece is the Hamilton Khaki Field watch. This watch gives off a utilitarian aesthetic and is water-resistant up to 300 feet. Similar to the Daniel Wellington, the Hamilton watch is easy to wear with both casual and formal outfits. I also appreciate the Timex Weekenders, another classic style at a much lower price point. As my first real watch, I began to understand, when wearing it, how a simple accessory could add to my wardrobe and assert my personality.

When people look at my wrist I hope they understand that I have a respect for classic accessories but with a modern sensibility.
